The Art Of Pestering

I thought being one of the lucky few graduates that landed a job that's actually in their subject I may pass on some advice about getting the job you really want and standing out from the rest.
I thought of nowhere better to start than pestering.

When our tutor told us to pester companies we wanted jobs from I hated the idea, nagging to get a job seem just the wrong way to do things but alas graduation came and went and all my polite 'just email me's' got me nowhere. So I set out to not be ignored planning to send email after email until something happened and then.....my inbox started to fill...and only after 2 emails!!

Obviously this wont happen to everyone but there are ways to get a reply and the most helpful one for me was questions!

My tactic was to email about a possibility of a work placement at the company sending my interactive pdf and a link to my website noting some of their work that had appealed to me and why. After exactly one week I would email them again asking if they had seen my email and what they thought of my work. I would also send another piece I had done on my own, out of university, wondering if they had any suggestions for it.

BOOM! Replies galore, although I admit I may have got lucky. Many said they didn't have the space for me, that wasn't the end though surely? I had contact! More than most people. I thanked them for the reply and that I understood the situation, especially in this climate. I then asked if they had any opinions on my work, things I could change/improve, what they liked and didn't. I got great feedback from this which really helped when starting the system all over again with a new company. I made sure they knew that if a position did come up I would still be interested and once again waited for a reply.

This can continue for a while until you may even have a good rapport with a company, just keep sending them work, ask for advice, ask questions and sooner or later someone will start to notice!

Good luck!
